Other Subjects

In order to develop the whole child, Heritage Oak believes that all students should receive quality instruction in enrichment areas such as physical education, French, Spanish, art, art appreciation, music and technology. Etiquette is also a cornerstone of the school curriculum with basic manners being taught in lower grades and formal Cotillion classes in Middle School. Elective classes are also available to Middle School students and include classes such as Debate, Theatre, Songwriting, and Art Design.

Art

At Heritage Oak, students will learn art techniques and concepts through instruction, example and encouragement. Art class will be used as a tool to build confidence, problem solve, create cultural awareness, gain personal satisfaction through individual accomplishments, exercise imagination, improve critical thinking skills, develop concentration, discover the joy of learning, and better understand themselves and the world around them.

French/Spanish

The foreign languages taught at Heritage Oak are French and Spanish. While Spanish is an option begining in fourth grade, Heritage Oak focuses primarily on French in its preschool and young elementary classrooms. The French language has maintained a well-deserved place of importance for a number of reasons:

•French is widely spoken on five continents and in over 43 countries in the world as a native tongue, a language of instruction, and/or a language of government.

•French is the most widely taught second language in the world after English.

•Over 20,000 English words have their origins in French.

•French is a principal language of diplomacy, high tech, and business in the world.

•French and English are the two official languages of many important international organizations such as the United Nations, the UNESCO, the World Health Organization, the International Center for Human Rights and Democratic Development, the European Community, the International Red Cross Organization, the Organization of African Unity, the International Monetary Fun, the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Games.

•French and English are consistently the two most commonly used languages of the internet because of the numerous websites available in both languages, ranging from fashion to finance, sports to science, music to medicine, education to entertainment

Debate

Debate is offered to Middle School students as a specialty class at Heritage Oak. Students practice public speaking and learn a variety of skills including verbal reasoning, critical thinking, impromptu speaking, argumentation, and vocal technique. Students are taught how to effectively argue their case while thinking critically and forming cohesive thoughts. Students improve their researching, note taking, and writing skills as well.

Physical Education

K-2nd Grade:
At this age, children should engage in a wide variety of large muscle experiences involving both loco motor and non-loco motor movements. Physical Education in k-2nd grade involves utilizing manipulatives such as bean bags, balls, hoops, etc. Use of these objects contributes to hand-eye coordination and helps students to transition into more sports-related skills and physical fitness.

3rd-5th Grade:
During the upper-elementary years, students work to improve coordination, reaction time, and strength. The majority of time is spent on sports skills but with a focus on the development of skills rather than than the competitive aspects. Games and other groups activities will regularly allow students to enhance their cooperative skills. Another focus of the upper-elementary physical education program is the importance of fitness and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Middle School:
Middle school boys and girls participate in physical education separately. The children switch by day between two different programs. One program is focused on personal fitness training which includes core strengthening, agility, balance, strength training, and strength endurance. The other program focuses on team sports and cardiovascular training.
