Guided Reading Gurus – Kindergarten (WEEK 1)

This class is designed to build a framework to develop reading fluency, comprehension, and phonics skills. The tailored small-group lessons will develop the reading process supported by independent reading strategies. It will provide a wonderful environment for students to receive differentiated instruction to improve their reading skills in preparation for the upcoming school year.

Deep Thinking Readers – 4th-5th Grade (WEEK 1)

Students in this camp will read high interest standards based fiction and non-fiction passages, discuss unfamiliar vocabulary, answer text dependent questions, work in small groups, and share what they have learned with the class. The focus on comprehension and individual and shared learning makes this a great class for all reading levels.

Read It and Eat It – 1st-2nd Grade (WEEK 1)

Students will learn the true meaning of classic literature selections while making creative art pieces and fun and tasty cooking projects aligned with the story. The class will read/listen to a book and discuss details, main ideas, and characters.  They will then participate in a writing assignment that goes along with the book.  Each day we will end the class by tasting the food that was discussed in the story. 

Phonemic Fun – Kindergarten (WEEK 2)

Alphabet Alphapalooza! This class is packed with phonemic awareness and phonics fun! Games for matching letters and sounds, rhyming, and counting phonemes will strengthen your child’s phonics skills.

Reading Rocks – Kindergarten (WEEK 6)

Each day students will read a different story, complete a reading response, and make a fun craft that goes along with the story. Children will spend time deciphering the genre of the text, studying character development, exploring new vocabulary, and sequencing. Students will create a fun work of art each day that expresses an important story element or character.  

Reading Rocks – 1st-2nd Grade (WEEK 6)

Each day students will read a different story, complete a reading response, and make a fun craft that goes along with the story. Children will spend time deciphering the genre of the text, study character development, explore new vocabulary, practice fluency, and discuss comprehension questions. Students will create a fun work of art each day that expresses an important story element or character. 

Build a Book-The Story of Ferdinand – Kindergarten-3rd Grade (WEEK 6)

Inspired by the beloved children’s book, this class will allow students to explore the various strategies to deeply understand a literature selection. The story will capture the students’ attention while giving them an opportunity to study story elements, explore character traits, and practice predicting, drawing connections, and making inferences. Students will also participate in various art and writing projects such as making puppets used to recreate the story, designing their own version of the book, and writing the story by hand. Students will also explore the character lessons displayed in the book and learn about respect, fairness, responsibility, caring, and compassion.

Build a Book- Skippyjon Jones – Kindergarten-3rd Grade (WEEK 7)

Inspired by the beloved children’s book series, this class will allow students to explore the various strategies to deeply understand a literature selection. The humor and playfulness of the will capture the students’ attention while giving them an opportunity to study story elements, explore character traits, and practice predicting, drawing connections, and making inferences. Students will also participate in various art and writing projects such as making puppets used to recreate the story, designing their own version of the book, and writing the story by hand. Students will also explore the character lessons displayed in the books and learn about respect, fairness, responsibility, caring, and compassion.

Each story will provide students with a genuine opportunity to practice reading short stories they can decode with phonics skills and sight word recognition. This class is ideal for the struggling reader or beginning reader as the stories will provide work in the foundation of reading though phonics and sight words.

Summer Reading Club – 3rd Grade (WEEK 10)

Camp Students will work to complete their summer reading assignment during this camp. Games and small group activities will bring the summer reading selection to life while students practice reading comprehension techniques as well as oral and silent reading strategies. 

Summer Reading Club – 4th Grade (WEEK 10)

Students will work to complete their summer reading assignment during this camp. Games and small group activities will bring the summer reading selection to life while students practice reading comprehension techniques as well as oral and silent reading strategies.
