Week 7 Specialty Camp

Learning with Legos (Preschool-Pre-kindergarten) *

Legos are not only fun to play with, they are fun to LEARN with too! This camp will focus on sorting, counting, patterning, letter shapes, and phonics skills. Though parents will see the results, campers won’t even realize they are learning as they participate in hands-on activities that work their fine-motor skills, eye-hand coordination, reading, and math skills!

Build a Book: Eric Carle (Kindergarten-3rd Grade) *

Inspired by the beloved Eric Carle children’s book series, this class will allow students to explore various strategies to deeply understand a literature selection as well as create a beautiful book filled with their artwork. The charm and repetitive style of the Brown Bear, Brown Bear series will capture the students’ attention while giving them an opportunity to create their own animal stories. Students will participate in various art and writing projects such as creating their own textured backgrounds and animals’ figures while adding text to design their own version of the book.

Journaling Artfully (4th-5th Grade)

This class will combine art and the art of journaling. Students will learn new techniques with paint, Zen-Tangle, collage, and design a journal for keeping memories, stories, poetry, and photography. They will experiment with gesso, embellishments, and other art mediums to create a unique setting for personal writing. This is a great opportunity for children who love to write and love art to create individualized pieces displaying their work.

Top Chef, Jr. (Kindergarten-8th Grade)

Mrs. Bernard is back with a brand new tasty menu for your little chef to create, sample and share with YOU! As always, our final day of camp will feature Top Chef Café, in which families can come taste all the delicious food we’ve been cooking up all week! Don’t miss this chance to be served a fresh lunch, created by your apron-clad culinary artist! Kitchen safety and sanitation will also be taught. Each chef will get to personalize his/her own apron and chef hat, and will receive a recipe booklet of every recipe made!

Web Design: Pokémon Trainer Society (4th-8th Grade)

This web design class will allow campers to create their own Pokémon Monster and then highlight it by designing a basic html website. Utilizing the Adobe Creative Suite, campers will get an introduction to many cutting-edge graphics programs used by designers today. Campers will need to bring a flash drive to camp in order to save and share their work with others.

Soccer (4th-8th Grade)

Campers will learn basic through advanced techniques while preparing for the soccer season. Taught by an experienced soccer player, this fun and educational camp will teach the responsibilities of each position on the field, how to successfully work as a team, various formations, rules and strategies. Shin guards and soccer balls are optional but recommended.

20:5:5 Circuit Training for Growing Strong Writers (6th-8th)

In this new addition to Camp Heritage Oak, students will work at a station for 20 minutes of focused instruction and practice in a specific language arts skill area.  Then, they will take a five-minute break.  Next, a five-minute quiz.  Then, they will switch to a different station.  Results?  Students will thrive in a small-group, short-burst environment in which they can choose what they want to work on, master short periods of intense focus, and see instant results.  This is about skills mastery, personal growth, self-esteem, and starting the year off with the necessary foundational skills.  Stations will include the following: punctuation, capitalization, spelling rules, MLA Format, sentence structure, analogies, reading comprehension, annotation, homophones inference, introdruction/thesis, conclusions, transitions, narrative, argument, voice, text structure, figurative language, researching.

Ready…Set…Pre-k: Phonics (Pre-kindergarten) *

As children move into pre-k, letter awareness and letter/sound association become the keys to classrooms success. In this camp, students will participate in activities, centers, songs, whole body activities, and fine motor emphasis as they focus on the sounds that the letters make. Writing and auditory activities will be emphasized as well.

Phonics & Writing (Kindergarten) *

Increase your child’s phonics and writing skills with hands-on activities. Students will strengthen phonics skills through fun-filled songs and center-based peer activities. Children will practice vowel sounds, consonant sounds, and blends each day as well as participating in spelling practice. Children will create their own sight word flash cards throughout the week, which will come home on the last day for continued practice over the summer. Journal prompts will expose children to creative writing as well as learning how to write complete sentences.

Fraction Fun (1st-2nd Grade) *

This class will make learning and practicing fractions exciting. Students will make interactive flap books, fun fraction sundaes, fraction pizzas and become fraction fanatics. Ipads and promethean board activities as well as center-based peer learning will give students many opportunities to explore fractions.

Pre-coding Club (Kindergarten-2nd Grade)

Do you have a child that loves technology and computers? If so, they will LOVE pre-coding club! Not only will students learn the basics of how to use a computer including how to properly use a mouse, home row typing finger placement, and how to open and close programs, they will also begin to understand the concept of coding and learn how to do some basic programming using JavaScript and their favorite characters from Angry Birds, Zombies, Frozen, Star Wars, Minecraft and More!

Sitting in the Director’s Chair (3rd-8th Grade)
Has your child ever wanted to make his or her own movie or YouTube video? This class will teach campers the basics of developing, shooting, and editing a video from start to finish using iMovie. Campers will also learn how to create photo collages, import music, and create sound effects as they work toward the final day of camp where they will premiere their movie for all to see!

Architects: Build a Tiny House (3rd-5th Grade) *

Students will dive deep to understand the how and why math concepts such as area, perimeter, and geometry that are used in building a home. This class will integrate multiple elements, such as problem solving, collaboration, design, and planning that connects concepts across multiple subjects. Each student will create a tiny house of their own using all these skills.

* Students must be able to speak English fluently to attend academic classes.
