First, the students learned about the sense of taste as they tried various types of apples and chose which one they liked best. The students collected the data and created a graph to show the class’ taste test results. They also learned about the various tools required to make apple sauce such as the apple peeler and corer. “The students were in awe and couldn’t believe that apples could be turned into something resembling a slinky!” Explained first grade teacher Ellen Prince.
The class also learned that ground cinnamon comes from cinnamon sticks. The students carefully combined the ingredients—apples, sugar, and a touch of cinnamon to make a final product that they all agreed smelled and tasted amazing.
“We strongly believe that the work that the children complete in class should have a direct impact on or use in the real world.” explains Heritage Oak Executive Director Phyllis M. Cygan, “this creates relevance to the child’s learning and fosters active engagement in each lesson.”
