Heritage Oak Teacher Named Inspiring Educator of the Year by Parenting OC Magazine
Yorba Linda, Calif. (February 8, 2018) -- Heritage Oak Private Education is proud to announce that its Middle School Science Teacher, Annie Shaw, has been honored as one of the Top 10 Teachers in Orange County and named "Most Inspiring Educator of the Year" by Parenting OC Magazine. The honor was bestowed on Shaw at Parenting OC's Top Teacher Event the evening of February 7, 2018. Over 100 teachers were nominated as "Top Teachers" by school administrators, and the top 25 were announced in mid-January.
Annie Shaw, who is celebrating 10 years as Heritage Oak’s Middle School Science teacher and Associated Student Government Advisor has inspired and encouraged hundreds of students. Each day, she aspires to “Love my students every day and if necessary I will use words.”
According to Mrs. Shaw, she loves teaching science because, “it is never stagnant; it is an ever-changing discipline, evolving and expanding. It allows us to satisfy our curiosity, tap into our creativity, design and innovate new ideas. We can engineer new possibilities for a better life for ourselves and the world around us.”
She also loves that her profession allows her to transform lives. She is known for challenging students to reach for excellence rather than settling for mediocrity, all the while providing them with unconditional love and encouragement. The bar is high in Mrs. Shaw’s class; however, due to encouragement and authentic caring spirit, each child rises to the challenge. She has an open-door policy and inviting persona spending lunches, breaks, and after school time with students as they talk, laugh, and, sometimes (more recently), cry together.
Mrs. Shaw is committed to modeling traits she expects from her students such as perseverance, thankfulness, humility, a can-do attitude, and a love for discovery. She is fair to everyone and doesn’t believe in disciplining the whole class for the mistakes of a few. As a teacher for over 20 years, she realizes that it is important to analyze ones teaching practices. Her students regularly take a survey to inform her of her strengths and weaknesses as a teacher.
The 2017-18 School Year began with much promise, however just one month into the school year, Mrs. Shaw was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and was quite devastated. She immediately went into “teacher mode” and made sure that her lesson plans, projects and labs were all done and ready for her substitute. Explains Mrs. Shaw, “Through the love, dedication and prayers of my students, I am happy to say that I am doing well. The love that was shown to me was incredible and I really felt that my students not only truly loved me but appreciated everything I do for them. My students helped me make lemonade from the lemons that were given to me!”
